Withholding

Tax withholding and the W-4 form

The W-4 tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck.

The short version

  1. You fill in a W-4 when you start a job.
  2. Life changes are a common reason to review it.
  3. The IRS offers an official withholding estimator.

01What the W-4 does

It gives your employer the information used to calculate federal income tax withholding. It does not change the tax you owe, only how much is paid during the year.

02When people review it

  • Starting a second job.
  • Marriage or divorce.
  • A new child or dependent.
  • A large change in income.

03Official tools

The IRS publishes a free Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov. Fiscelo does not calculate withholding for anyone.

04Questions to ask

Your employer’s payroll team can explain how to submit a new W-4. A qualified tax professional can help with your own situation.
