Tax season

The tax forms that arrive in January

Early in the year, several forms arrive by mail or online. Each reports one kind of income or payment.

The short version

  1. A W-2 reports wages from an employer.
  2. 1099 forms report other kinds of income.
  3. Keep every form until your return is complete.

01The W-2

Employers send a W-2 showing wages paid and taxes withheld for the year.

02Common 1099 forms

  • 1099-NEC for some independent work.
  • 1099-INT for interest earned.
  • Other 1099 forms for other kinds of payments.

03Keeping them organized

Use one folder, paper or digital, for every tax form that arrives. Check each one against your own records.

04Where to get help

The IRS website explains each form. A qualified tax professional can help with your own return.
